How It Works

Binds voltage-gated sodium channels in insect/mite nerve membranes, blocking channel inactivation, causing paralysis and death of Sarcoptes mites and Pediculus lice — making Permethrin effective against scabies (sarcoptes scabiei), head lice (pediculus humanus capitis).

How long does permethrin 5% take to kill scabies?

Permethrin begins killing Sarcoptes mites within minutes of contact — all mites should be dead within 24 hours of a correctly applied treatment. However, itching continues for 2–4 weeks after treatment as the immune system reacts to dead mite debris, eggs, and faeces. Persistent itching alone does not indicate treatment failure.

Should the whole family use permethrin cream?

Yes — simultaneous treatment of all household members and close contacts is essential for scabies eradication. People sharing a bed or having prolonged skin contact in the 4–6 weeks before treatment must also be treated, even if asymptomatic. Furniture and mattresses cannot be treated with permethrin cream — vacuuming is sufficient as mites rarely survive off-host.
