How it works
Pregabalin binds to a protein (the alpha-2-delta subunit) on calcium channels in nerve cells. This reduces the release of several chemical messengers that carry pain and excitation signals, which calms overactive nerves. It does not work like an opioid or an ordinary painkiller, and it often takes days to weeks to reach its full effect.
Uses
Neuropathic (nerve) pain: pregabalin is used in adults for nerve pain caused by conditions such as diabetic nerve damage, shingles-related pain (postherpetic neuralgia) and spinal cord injury.
Epilepsy: it is used as an add-on treatment for partial (focal) seizures, with or without secondary generalisation, in people who are already taking other epilepsy medicines.
Generalised anxiety disorder: in the UK and Europe, pregabalin is also licensed for generalised anxiety disorder in adults. In the USA it is not licensed for anxiety, but it is licensed for fibromyalgia.

Dosage and how to take it
Take pregabalin exactly as your prescriber has told you, with or without food, and swallow it with water. Do not take more than prescribed and do not share your medicine. Do not stop suddenly: reduce the amount gradually over at least a week, as advised by your prescriber, to avoid withdrawal symptoms such as trouble sleeping, headache, nausea, anxiety and sweating.
