How it works

Danazol reduces the pituitary gland's release of the hormones FSH and LH, which lowers oestrogen production by the ovaries. In endometriosis this causes the womb lining and endometrial deposits to shrink and become inactive. In hereditary angioedema it raises levels of C1 esterase inhibitor, a protein that helps control swelling attacks.

Endometriosis: danazol is used to ease pelvic pain and other symptoms of endometriosis by lowering the hormones that stimulate the womb lining.

Fibrocystic breast disease: in some countries it is prescribed for severe breast pain and nodularity that has not responded to other treatment.

Hereditary angioedema: danazol is used to help prevent attacks of swelling in people with this rare inherited condition.
